Carpet Cleaning Methods
There are plenty of carpet cleaning methods out there, and choosing the best one for your carpet means you have to be aware of the techniques used. Here are some of the most common carpet cleaning methods to consider.
Carpet Cleaning Methods
While shampooing carpet is one of the more popular ways to clean and revive carpet, there are other methods, too. You can steam clean your carpet, foam clean, as well as dry clean your carpeting. Here is how each method works:
- Carpet Shampoo
This is a tried and true carpet cleaning method that has stood the test of time and is the most common carpet cleaning method. The process involves applying cleaning solution or shampoo to your carpet to form foam. The foam’s ingredients are designed to attract the dirt in your carpet. The carpet cleaning solution is then left to dry and once it does, it becomes brittle and separates itself from the carpet fibers. Now all that’s left is to collect the remains with a vacuum cleaner.
The shampoo cleaner method is quite simple and rarely requires professional help. All you need is shampoo and a vacuum cleaner. However, very strong shampoo products can damage your carpet so it’s crucial that you use the right quality and amount of shampoo on your carpet.
- Steam Cleaning or Hot Water Extraction
The hot water extraction/steam cleaning method is also another popular carpet cleaning method. The method uses hot water rather than steam and is very effective. Hot water with temperatures of about 150 to 200F is sprayed on the carpet. This hot water under high pressure helps to loosen dirt and dust particles in your carpet. The dirt is then forced to come out and sucked using a vacuum cleaner. The hot water is usually mixed with a cleansing solution or detergent.
This cleaning method is considered to be one of the best deep cleaning methods because hot water kills dust mites, fungi and bacteria. It’s typically carried out by professionals because you need to be aware of the temperature of water required for your type of carpet fabric. However, you can also rent steam cleaning machines.
- Dry Powder
As the name implies, this cleaning method doesn’t use water. A dry powder used is an absorptive material made up of solvent, detergent and a small amount of water. No matter what type of carpet pile you have, this is a great option. The powder is sprinkled over your carpet and spread thoroughly with the help of rotating machines before being left to settle for about 15 minutes. Then using a vacuum cleaner, the powder and dirt accumulated is removed.
Foam cleaning can also be carried out along with steam cleaning. Shampoo is spread on the carpet with the help of a rotating brush and foam is formed. The foam is then left to sit for about an hour or so and the dirt is removed using a vacuum cleaner. Since all the shampoo may not be removed, the cleaning process can be followed with steam cleaning. This combination of cleaning methods results in a fresh and clean carpet free from dirt and debris.
When it comes to carpet cleaning methods, it’s important to choose a method that best suits your carpet. It’s important to clean your carpet often so it can stay in pristine condition. Understand what’s involved in the cleaning process and don’t shy away from asking for a professional opinion.
